Ken Steele: Rethinking Higher Education, in the Classroom and Beyond

Teaching & Learning Workshop: Rethinking Higher Education, in the Classroom and Beyond For almost a millennium, lecture halls and libraries have been fundamental to knowledge transmission. For about a century, essays and exams, credit units and grading curves have provided a useful framework to assess student learning. But today’s university students arrive on campus with quite different skills and expectations, ready access to a virtual universe of digital resources, and an eye to the rapidly-evolving 21st-century labour market. Universities do a disservice to today’s learners if they try to educate them using medieval or industrial-age models of research, pedagogy, and assessment.  In this dynamic workshop, higher ed strategist Ken Steele will share thought-provoking bright ideas and best practices in teaching and assessment, from smart textbooks and cognitive tutors, to active and experiential learning, to gamification and microcredentials as models for formative assessment. Participants will engage in reflection, discussion and brainstorming about teaching and learning practice at SFU, and appropriate, practical innovations to be considered in the short and medium terms. Be sure to bring your smartphone, tablet or laptop so that you can participate in real-time online polls. Note: This event is capped at 40 participants.
